Soap Profiles: Dirty Den Watts

When it comes to the big names in EastEnders over the years, Dirty Den Watts is up there with the best of them. As landlord of the Queen Vic, husband to the long suffering Angie and not very good father to Sharron, he was the at the very centre of may of the great East Enders story lines.

Who can forget that famous Christmas edition in the eighties when Den told Angie that he wanted a divorce, over 35 million tuned into EastEnders that day, over half of the population of the UK. Even Den’s own mother would have to admit that he was something of a devious character and the fact that he fathered the baby of his daughters best friend, Michelle, shows that he had the morals of an alley cat.

He had skirmishes with many of the characters of the time, often falling out with Pauline Fowler over one thing or another and quite a story was made over his run ins with Phil Mitchell, who would later take over from Den as having an ongoing interest in the Queen Vic.

"Dirty Den Watts"The actor who played Den, Lesley Grantham, actually served 10 years in prison when he was younger for murdering a taxi driver in Germany and when that news got out the press had an absolute field day and as in true soap opera tradition, after Den was murdered by a group of gangsters, he went onto to make a return to the programme some years later when it was revealed that he didn’t die after all.

On his return he went on to further play a major part in the programme until he really was murdered, this time by his second wife who after only enduring a fraction of the hassle that Angie had to put up with decided that she had had enough.

It is testament to Lesley Grantham’s acting ability that Dirty Den is still spoken about today and it would not be an exaggeration to say that few have been able to generate the kind of anger amongst viewers that Den seemed to be able to without even trying. You either loved him or hated him but one thing was for sure and that was there was never a dull moment when Den was around and many EastEnders viewers will agree that nobody has be quite able to take his place.

Dancing On Ice 2012: The Final

The day that we have all been waiting for has finally arrived, the final of Dancing On Ice 2012. I don’t know about you but I can’t believe how quickly this years series has gone and there us no doubt in my mind that it has been the best one yet.

Anyway, Chico, Matthew and Jorgie are the celebrities who have made it and no matter what happened in the final, they can all be proud that they have reached this far. The way the final was set out was that the first part of the programme would see one of the celebrities voted off, with the remaining two being left to skate against each other in the second part of the show to become the winner of Dancing On Ice, 2012.

As it turned out, the first ice skater to leave was Chico, and even though he was in fact the favourite to be the first one to go, he didn’t really help matters when he almost dropped his skating partner Jodeyne Higgins. I don’t think it was down to nerves but instead a simple mistake which happened at the wrong time, the final!

All of the judges were extremely complimentary about Chico, and quire right too. At 40 years of age he was one of the older contestants and he never once let himself down. Don’t forget that he was a last minute entry after Chesney Hawkes was forced to pull out of the competition due to a broken leg. Chico never gave less than 100% and when he was voted off he took it all with good grace. Like most of the other competitors, it was quite clear that he had experienced the time of his life and with his wife and child in the audience, he thanked everyone, from his family to his dancing partner Jodeyne Higgins who he said was the most incredible lady.

So, the second part of Sunday nights show saw the final between Matthew Wolfenden and Jorgie Porter and to say that it was a closely fought contest would have to be the understatement of the year. Matthew was the favourite with the bookies but we all know that they have been known to get it wrong sometimes and there was no way that Jorgie was not going to give it her very best shot.

Both finalists danced the bolero which was made famous by Torvill and Dean and it was actually Jorgie who impressed the judges more than Matthew, scoring a fantastic 59 points to Matthews 58.5 but when it came to the viewing public it turned out that the bookies were correct again and Matthew was crowned the winner of Dancing On Ice 2012.

When he was interviewed afterwards it was quite astonishing when Matthew revealed to Philip and Christine that when he went on the ice for the first time he thought that everyone would laugh at him because he was so bad and he wasn’t at all confident that he would do well at all. He also added that the training and the competing in the competition had in fact been the hardest experience of his life and that if he was asked to take part again he didn’t know if he would. His dancing on ice partner, Nina Ulanova, said that the past 6 months had been really hard but she was obviously just as delighted at Matthew at being crowned the champions.

When Jorgie was interviewed, she joked that the thing that she had most enjoyed about Dancing On Ice was the fact that she had got to dress up in lovely glittering costumes every week but joking aside, she really did do very well indeed and when Jane Torvill was asked about Jorgie she was quite emotional, she said that Jorgie performed so well she looked like a ballerina and I don’t think that anyone would disagree that she should be extremely proud of her achievement in this years competition.

Even though this was the final I don’t think that I have ever seen the judges on Dancing On Ice so impressed by the performances, there is little doubt that any of the finalists, as well as a couple of the other contestants who didn’t get this far, could actually go on and ice skate as their main occupation.

"Dancing On Ice Matthew Wolfenden"

Anyway, that’s Dancing On Ice over for another year and there is no doubt that Matthew Wolfenden is a worthy champion but a big well done to everyone who took part, they all really made it a series to remember.
